Young Plant Program Lead

Job Description: Young Plant Department Lead Sales and Broker Support Specialist
Report to: Sales and Marketing Manager

Skagit Horticulture has an excellent opportunity for an experienced horticulturist to join our team leading our Young Plant Program.  Skagit Horticulture is located in the beautiful Skagit Valley an hour north of Seattle.  Central to the Cascade Mountains to the east and the San Juan Islands to the west, it is the ideal climate for perennial plant production. Skagit Horticulture is a leading supplier of young plants across the nation, with a strong reputation for quality plants and market innovation.

Responsibilities:

  • Handle all aspects of customer inquiries and phone calls
  • Make outgoing sales calls to existing and potential customers
  • Process and enter orders
  • Work through and with broker sales reps to service customers and drive sales
  • Employ various digital communication methods to present product to customers and broker sales reps
  • Attend trade shows as necessary, to support sales efforts
  • Assist Finished Sales department as requested
  • Conduct facility tours

Young plant sales: Liners and Starts

  • Represent Young Plant Program to Brokers and Customers
  • Know, with confidence, our products, pricing and programs
  • Understand production cycles and advising on growing, culture
  • Lead a program approach to selling
  • Target high volume customers for contract and volume sales opportunities

Sales Lead Liner Department

  • Lead the Liner Program efforts
  • Lead the Liner Team
  • Manage Weekly inventory movement and need for sales focus
  • Create and Plan weekly coversheets, availabilities and sale items as needed
  • Develop weekly call strategies and focus
  • Work closely with marketing to develop marketing strategies

Primary liaison and support for brokers and customers

  • Be the voice and face of Skagit Horticulture's Young Plant Program
  • Work closely with Brokers to develop a program approach to Skagit Young Plant Program
  • Train and present Young Plant Program to Brokers
  • Work closely with Young Plant field representatives to maximize opportunities
  • Learn, develop and solicit contract growing opportunities with major grower
  • Understand Key account programs with major growers to capture volume program sales opportunities
  • Work with our Breeding partners to be on the forefront of new varieties
  • Work with our Brokers and Breeding partners to develop supply chain reliability
  • Work with our Brokers and Breeding partners to gain supply chain opportunities

Travel and support to western growers / tradeshows / grower field days

  • Travel to major customers with brokers
  • Work with major customers to align Skagit as primary vendor of choice
  • Develop a 'Program Approach' to selling Skagit Young Plants
  • Be the 'Western Region' Key Account rep to support major Broker grower partners in the western US

Program Development

  • Intimate knowledge of Young Plant Programs
  • Regular visits and crop reviews at production facilities: Mount Vernon and Mabton
  • Work with planning to develop yearly programs and pricing
  • Work with New Plant and Breeders for new plant introductions
  • Gain feedback from Brokers and Growers on program
  • Use field trial review to develop new programs and introductions

Office Based Position, but with regular travel to see growers and brokers in Western United States

  • Mount Vernon Based

Qualifications / Education

  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, business or related field
  • 5 Year's plus Horticultural sales experience, with established grower and broker relationships
  • Experience with perennials and young plants
  • Willingness to travel through the Western United States
  • Strong computer, presentation, people and sales skills
