Cost Accountant

Skagit Horticulture, leading horticulture and agriculture group of companies, is seeking a Cost Accountant based at our Mount Vernon, Washington facility.  This position is an integral member of the finance team and is responsible for the development, calculation, analysis and reporting of actual and standard costs and related variances.  The goal is to develop methodology that best assigns costs across product lines to provide management with reporting and analysis to improve the profitability of the company.  The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, solid understanding of agriculture and/or manufacturing costing, strong excel and ERP system and reporting skills.  The position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Responsibilities:

  • Update and maintain item actual and standard costs and understand variances
  • Analyze monthly costs and methodology to assign costs to inventory
  • Perform periodic standard cost updates
  • Perform regular cost analysis on existing products to evaluate assumptions for labor and overhead
  • Perform analysis of labor and overhead costs by value stream, location, and report on variances and profitability
  • Analyze the cost impact of changes to bill of materials
  • Assist with department managers with product costing requests
  • Maintain and assist in developing methodology for updating standard costs
  • Analyze and trace the underlying activities to test, modify, or redefine the cost drivers used to assign costs to system standards
  • Facilitate periodic inventory audits with inventory manager
  • Perform month end closing process for inventory valuation, including preparation of journal entries and reconciliation of balance sheet accounts
  • Prepare internal reports for Management to help evaluate Company performance
  • Assist accounting department with other tasks as necessary

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
3-5 years of similar experience as listed above
Strong analytical skills required; experience in multi-unit agriculture business preferred
Intermediate to Advanced Microsoft Excel, Access and ERP system skills desirable
Highest standards of accuracy and precision; highly organized
Articulate with excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to think creatively, highly-driven and self-motivated
Ability to complete projects timely and accurately critical
Demonstrated ability to roll-up sleeves and work with team members in a hands-on capacity
